What is Mold?
Mold is a fungus that causes materials to biodegrade. There are thousands of known species of mold and all require moisture for growth. Mold derives energy not through photosynthesis, but from the matter on which it dwells. Many species of mold also synthesize mycotoxins which can be extremely harmful to humans. Mold reproduces by producing large numbers of small spores which can germinate in as little as 12 hours. These mold spores will grow upon coming into contact with areas that contain excessive moisture.
Where is Mold Commonly Found?
With the presence of mold spores, available nutrient sources, adequate temperature and relative humidity, and most importantly: moisture, mold can be found most commonly from several sources:
Kitchen, bathroom, and plumbing leaks
Excessive watering, sprinkler overspray, and drainage problems
Floods, sewer backups, and roof leaks
High water table and vapor transfer
Lifestyle and condensation
Architectural and construction defects
There are many materials that assist in the growth of mold:
Drywall and Latex paint
Wood, paper, and cardboard products
Clothing, wall coverings, and leather
Carpeting, backing materials, and furnishings, dirt, soil and dust residue on any surface
Furnace filters and lined ductwork
Some of the signs of mold infectivity:
Visible mold growth
Water-stained walls, ceilings, carpet and tack strips
High humidity (above desired range of 30-50%)
Musty or bad odor
History of mold problems or previous water intrusion
How is mold dangerous? Why must it be remediated?
Out of thousands of species of mold, many common molds are black in color. There are several types of mold that are proven to be incrementally nefarious to your health and home. Some of the most dangerous species of mold include Stachybotrys Chartarum and Aspergillus. When these dangerous species begin to grow in areas with moisture, they release toxic metabolites known as mycotoxins. If you have experienced any of the following symptoms then they may have been caused by the presence of mold in your home:
Nasal/Sinus congestion
Excessive coughing/wheezing and breathing difficulties
Sore throat and upper respiratory infections - Skin/eye irritation - Upper respiratory infections
Burning, watery, or reddened eyes
Blurry vision or light sensitivity
Headache and memory problems
Mood changes
Aches and pains
Nosebleeds
Dermatitis
Immune suppression
Fatigue - Chills/fever
